THE DAV TRANSPORTATION NETWORK

The DAV Transportation Network is a nationwide program to provide transportation services to veterans in need of medical care at VA facilities. It is a significant addition to the full array of DAV programs and services that currently serve this nation's disabled veterans and their families.

The DAV Transportation Network has been developed in cooperation with VA Central Office officials, and is intended to operate as a fully integrated service within each VA medical facility.

The program is recognized as an official VAVS activity. As such, volunteers involved in the DAV Transportation Network will be considered VAVS volunteers for the purpose of credit for volunteer hours performed, and for liability protection to volunteers performing in official capacities.

The volunteer transportation network is designed to provide transportation services to veterans in need of medical care at VA Medical Facilities and who have no other means of transportation.

Volunteer transportation services consist of but are not limited to the following:

1. Private vehicles
2. DAV Donated Vans
3. Public transportation
4. Contracted transportation
5. Government owned vehicle

The Department of California operates the largest Transportation Network in the nation. Operating more than 50 vans in 11 separate programs throughout California the Transportation Network transported more than 70,000 veterans totaling more than 1,200,000 miles last year. Only through the dedication and combined efforts of the Department of California's DSO's, Transportation Coordinators and volunteer drivers is this possible. Of particular importance is the more than 76,000 hours it took to accomplish this task. All of these hours were donated by drivers, men and women, who know and understand the importance of veterans receiving medical care at VA Medical Centers.

If you are a veteran and need a ride or if you would like to volunteer as a driver please contact the Transportation Office nearest your home. A list of offices is provided below.
